Check out Mother Cabrini student Savannah Dominguez talking about choosing to be SUGAR-FREE below! Energy Up!! WOOOOO

Today Energy Up worked with Mother Cabrini High School to promote a healthy school lunch for the students in the school. Students gathered in the cafeteria during designated hours to try the new, healthy chicken, the salad bar and several other foods. Having spent the whole day in the cafeteria working with Voltage, I was able to see exactly how the students were responding to the new foods and environment.

The green and red lights sparkling, the music pumping, pink and turquoise table cloths and balloons everywhere created a fun and comfortable environment for the girls to get together and try new things. I was met with a very positive reaction to not only the cooked chicken but also the new salad dressings. Girls filled in to the cafeteria line faster than ever, excited to see what Voltage had to offer, knowing she’s never let us down before. What was surprising to the girls was finding out that the food being served was actually school food! How astonishing it was to learn that the school was capable of such things.
Eager to hear more of what the girls thought, I asked several of them how their day went. I was met with several responses such as, “Great!” and “Fun!” When I asked about the food, one girl explained that the chicken was better than before and that the rice was also much better than usual. I was also told that the salad dressings were fantastic!  She claimed that it was so good she ate a whole plate, as did I.

We, of course, had a few negative responses such as complaints about the lack of ketchup and the vending machines. The vending machine problem will be solved on its own if the school decides to be accountable for their actions. Though with the ketchup craze, one girl said, “I can’t live without ketchup at school,” to which I promptly replied with, “It doesn’t belong in school therefore you can live with ketchup outside of school.” I said this with a smile as I told her to sparkle up, letting her know that my retort was in no way to be taken in a bad way, just as an explanation.

Overall the Energy Up Invasion of Health Day at Cabrini was a success! The girls gobbled up the salads faster than ever before, adored the big pink cups used for water and enjoyed the fun music filled environment.  I know the girls at Mother Cabrini High School would be more than happy to be a part of another one of these events in the future. I also know that we all expect great things to happen with the food in the cafeteria and eagerly wait for the good results.

Queens school plans to go sugar-free; Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria also bans bakes sales

Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria also bans bakes sales
By Clare Trapasso / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

An Astoria school has banned bake sales and swapped out chocolate milk for water in an effort to make the school healthier.

The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria is working with a nutritionist to eventually make the all-girls, public middle and high school completely sugar-free. Many of the school’s roughly 500 students have also pledged to eat better.

“We wanted to raise awareness about making healthy choices,” said Principal Laura Mitchell. “My hope is when [the students\] leave the building, they continue to make healthy choices and educate their families.”

The school has been creating no- or low-sugar breakfasts and lunches for students, using agave and honey to sweeten dishes, she said. It also boasts a salad bar stocked with hummus and zucchini and corn salad and offers home-made dressings.

Omega Water donated Omega-3 fortified water to the school to replace sugary fruit juices.

But the cafeteria still serves pizza and beef patties and students can choose from a variety of chips and chocolate snacks from the vending machines — a problem Mitchell plans to remedy soon.

“Our goal over time is to be as much sugar-free as we can be,” she said. “We’re in transition.”

Kathie (High Voltage) Dolgin, founder of Energy Up Voltage Approved, a group that works to get sugar out of schools, has been working with the Astoria school to make that goal a reality.

She held a “cafeteria takeover” at the school recently during which students ate healthy lunches with visitors from corporations and led after-school nutrition and exercise programs for girls and their parents.

“Sugar is America’s No. 1 drug and it has no business in our schools,” she said, noting it’s the leading cause of obesity in the country.

If the program is successful, Dolgin said she hopes to expand into other schools.

Women’s Leadership sophomore Rebeca Rodriguez, 16, of Astoria, said Dolgin “definitely opened our eyes to how much sugar is in foods.”

“I want to do this so I can be healthy,” she said of giving up sugar. “I’ve seen what sugar and bad foods can do to people.”

Fellow sophomore Ishrak Elamri, 15, of Astoria, said she gave up cookies, chocolate and bottled iced tea after meeting Dolgin.

“I have way more energy than I did,” she said. “I’m more awake in school and less lazy now.”

Shame
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Behaviors designed to "uncover" or "expose" others are sometimes used for this purpose, as are utterances like "Shame!" or "Shame on you!"

When i see an advertisement or read about a product that is so UTTERLY DECEITFUL, I put them in the HALL OF SHAME!

The product must STAND OUT as such a complete misrepresentation of what it really is....many products are not particularly good for you...but a product in the Hall Of Shame is clearly misleading and deserves to be called out.

The Hall of Shame uses faulty science and studies to back up their pitch.  It manipulates emotions and lack of knowledge and uses misleading language and artwork on packaging while manipulating the public's lack of nutritional knowledge.  HOW OFFENSIVE!!!

ENERGY UP! feels that corporate America would be happy to produce healthier foods...it is our job to DEMAND IT!!!!

If one of our girl's feel that a product belongs in the Hall Of Shame we will be happy to take a look and discuss it. Email your product to us by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it -- High Voltage will read each submission personally and decide whether or not they belong in the Hall of Shame.

Below you'll find products that have already found their way into the ENERGY UP! HALL OF SHAME
